The four parts

## Medicare has four parts.

Original Medicare is Parts A and B. Part C and Part D are offered by private plans approved by Medicare.

### Part A: Hospital

Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing after a hospital stay, hospice and some home health. Premium-free for most people with 40 quarters of work.

### Part B: Medical

Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and durable medical equipment. $202.90 a month for most people in 2026, with a $283 deductible.

### Part C: Medicare Advantage

Private plans that combine A, B and usually D, with a network and a yearly out-of-pocket limit.

Good questions

## Questions, answered.

**What is the difference between Medicare Part A and Part B?**

Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing after a hospital stay and hospice. Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and medical equipment.

**When should I sign up for Medicare?**

During your Initial Enrollment Period, the seven months around your 65th birthday, unless you have employer coverage from active work. Sign up in the three months before your birthday month so coverage starts on time.

**How much does Medicare cost in 2026?**

Most people pay $0 for Part A and $202.90 a month for Part B, with a $283 Part B deductible. Higher incomes pay an IRMAA surcharge.

**Do I need more than Original Medicare?**

Original Medicare has no yearly out-of-pocket limit and no drug coverage, so most people add Medigap and Part D, or choose a Medicare Advantage plan.
